Charlie Brown, a member of the Denver City Council, presented firsthand insight into the ramifications of both recreational and medical legalization of cannabis in Colorado. Despite fears that such broad legalization would lead to more car accidents, higher teen use rates, and other destructive societal ills, none of these fears have been realized. Instead, the state has brought in millions of dollars in tax revenue, which it is using to fund schools and other beneficial public projects. While there were some challenges in setting up regulations for cannabis, the laws have worked out very well. There are always problems when implementing a new system, but by intelligently solving the issues instead of retreating to prohibitionist policies, Colorado has done very well.
