Dan Herer, son of Jack Herer, one of the most well known and respected cannabis activists in history, talked extensively about the incredible environmental and economic benefits of hemp. He noted that hemp was the first plant to be described as a “billion-dollar” crop back in 1938, as it has more applications than anything else on the planet. Hemp can help reduce deforestation by acting as a source of paper and building materials. The United States government even called on farmers in 1942 to grow hemp, as it was seen as integral to winning World War II. Hemp has thousands of applications, and if applied to society as a whole, could drastically decrease our reliance on oil and many types of toxic chemicals.
